Casey Stengel’s New York Baseball Legacy

Casey Stengel piloted so many of the great New York Yankees teams up in the Bronx. But he didn’t always wear the Yankee pinstripes. He also played for the New York Giants and Brooklyn’s Daffiness Dodgers as they were known at one time. In 1913, in the historic first game ever played at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, and also the first game ever played between the Dodgers and the Yankees, none other than Casey Stengel hit the first home ever slugged at Ebbets Field in this exhibition game — against the Yankees! When Mr. Stengel passed, the great writer for The Los Angeles Times, Jim Murray, wrote, “God is certainly getting an earful tonight.”
