As the leader of this important project, J. Robert Oppenheimer gathered the best minds in physics to address the problem of creating an atomic bomb in order to have one before the Nazis did. This work was performed at the Los Alamos laboratory, which Oppenheimer oversaw, resulting in his designation as the “father of the atomic bomb.”
