He had a reputation as a fighter, a scrapper. When Billy Martin‘s playing career ended, he became a scout, a coach, a minor league manager, and a major league manager, all for the Minnesota Twins. One of his pupils was future Hall of Famer Rod Carew, who enthused, “I loved Billy Martin. He taught me how to play second base, how to turn the double play. I even named him Godfather to one of my daughters. And when I asked him, he cried like a baby.”
