With the beloved and admired Gil Hodges at last being enshrined in baseball’s Hall of Fame on July 24, the Los Angeles Dodgers will retire his number 14 before their June 4 game against the New York Mets. Of course Hodges managed the Miracle Mets the year they won the World Series in 1969. An eight-time All-Star, who played 16 seasons with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, Hodges is second in franchise history with both 361 home runs and 1,254 RBI’s. The baseball world was shocked on April 2, 1972 when Gil Hodges died suddenly of a heart attack two days before he was to turn 48. Hodges’ son, Gil Jr., and daughter Irene, will participate in the ceremony honoring their father at Dodger Stadium.
