Anyone lucky enough to have spent five minutes in the company of Don Drysdale would believe they had met their new best friend. But on the pitching mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers, it was a different matter. “I hate all hitters,” he said. “I start a game mad and I stay that way until it’s over.” Fellow Hall of Famer Frank Robinson said of Drysdale’s penchant for brushing back and hitting batters, “He was mean enough to do it, and he did it continuously. You could count on him doing it. And when he did it, he just stood there on the mound and glared at you to let you know he meant it.”
