Art Carney is beloved to this day for his role as “Ed Norton” in Jackie Gleason’s truly classic TV sitcom The Honeymooners. But Carney was also an Oscar winner, plus he earned a Golden Globe Award and six Primetime Emmy Awards. What many do not know: during World War II he served during the Battle of Normandy, was wounded, took shrapnel in his leg, and this caused him to walk with a limp the rest of his life because it made his right leg slightly shorter than his left. Carney was such a terrific performer, however, that one never notices this in any of his fine film or TV work. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
