In 1969 Neil Alden Armstrong became the first man to ever walk on the surface of the Moon. He fulfilled a national goal that had been proposed by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 “of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth” by the end of the 1960’s.
