The first black heavyweight boxing champion of the world was Jack Johnson. His parents had been slaves who were freed during the Civil War. “I made a lot of mistakes out of the ring,” he once said, “but I never made any in it.” He also said, “I’m Jack Johnson. Heavyweight champion of the world. I’m black. They never let me forget it. I’m black all right! I’ll never let them forget it!”
